  Nowhere is that more evident than on the southeast corner of Bay and St. Joseph St., where 1001 Bay St., one of the least attractive condos in Toronto, occupies the best part of a city block.

  This late-model slab, with its multi-coloured glass facades and clumsy concrete podium, proves once and for all that, actually, more is less, not the other way around.

  At street level it's cluttered and confusing; above it's strangely blank and unpleasant to look at. It's almost as if it was built before the architects had finished the design.

  On the other hand, the designers did attempt to address the corner by chamfering the building. But the meanness of the materials and the painful ordinariness of the design negate whatever good intentions might have been involved.
