  • Lighthall, W.d.. (2005, 23 July). "Yorkville condo has historic link". Toronto Star.

Invar Building Corp. has launched sales for 100 Yorkville at Bellair. The Yorkville intersection is also where the original Mount Sinai Hospital was established, and a two-storey façade from the old hospital building has been restored and will be incorporated into the smaller of the two condominiums.

The development's eight- and 17-storey luxury condo buildings will be in the heart of the fashionable and upscale Yorkville neighbourhood, near the Yorkville Ave. and Bellair St. site.

"It's a bit of a sad story. Mount Sinai moved out of there a long time ago and for the last 20 years or so, the building has been vacant," says Michael McCelland, a principal with E.R.A. Architects Inc., a Toronto-based firm specializing in heritage restoration.

A Jewish women's group, the Ezras Noshim Society, established Mount Sinai Hospital on the site in 1923 in a building that previously held a private hospital. (In 1974, Mount Sinai moved to 600 University Ave.)

The remaining façade dates from 1934, when a surgical wing designed in a style McClelland calls Georgian revival was added to the original structure, which dated from the 1870s.

"The thing that's been really surprising is the number of people that have stopped by and said they were born there," says Chris Lloyd, vice-president of Granleigh Construction Ltd., the construction management arm of project developer, Invar Building.

Toronto architect David Pontarini, a principal with Hariri and Pontarini Architects Inc., was hired to create a development of contemporary design that would appeal to the high-end condo buyer, and blend with the historical façade.
