The experience of building the Chocolate Factory Lofts on Queen St. W. was not exactly sweet, but construction is now almost finished and people have started to move in.
The developer is holding a Halloween open house today and tomorrow from noon to 4 p.m. to sell off the remaining units.
"This was a daunting design task and incredible engineering feat," says Nestor Repetski of Winnick Realty, who is marketing the project at 955 Queen St. W. for the Plazacorp Group.
The design and construction teams took two early 20th-century buildings and added a third brand new building along Queen St. to link and extend them.
"The problem was that the two older structures were built about 25 years apart," Repetski says. "So there was no correlation between them in terms of ceiling heights or anything. It was incredibly challenging."
The result is a mixture of old and new.
There are units with wooden beams and exposed brick, some with exposed concrete walls and ceilings, and others with large windows and Juliet balconies.
The project has 146 units spread over six floors but Repetski says there's only a "smattering" left.
"We have a little bit of everything from studios at $169,900 all the way up to penthouses at $400,000-plus. There are about 40 still available."
A new model suite has been created in one of the units in the older part of the project at 955 Queen St. W.
