As vice-president of highrise construction for The Daniels Corp., Sam Tassone thought he had seen just about everything when it came to building condos.
The 20-storey building was finished last summer on High Park Blvd. just north of Bloor St. W. Developed as a partnership between Daniels and Nexxt Development Corp., the condo was constructed on a site formerly occupied by a Christian Scientist church, built in 1928.
This was done by excavating under the church, and erecting a supporting grid of steel columns and beams. Structural support for the church was then transferred from its foundations, which had to be demolished to construct the new parking garage, to this temporary support system. (Designed by engineering consultants Isherwood Associates and built by Bermingham Construction Ltd.)
Having the church's rotunda built into the front of the condominium's main-floor lobby also caused a big issue for project designers Graziani + Corazza Architects Inc.

Two suites remain unsold in High Park Condominiums, a highrise building constructed on the base of an old church on High Park Ave.
"The building is completed, the landscaping is pretty well done and it just looks terrific," says Niall Haggart, vice-president of development for the Daniels Corp.
The ground-floor façade belongs to the Third Church of Christ, built in 1928 and designed by architect Murray Brown, as do the unique octagonal lobby, terrazzo floors and fireplace.
Original church doors lead out to a landscaped courtyard at the back of building, and lamp posts and flagstone walkways lend character to the grounds.
High Park Condominiums is located at 70 High Park Ave., just north of Bloor St. West.
