  • Hume, Christopher. (2005, 16 April). "Competing styles make for conflicted building". Toronto Star.

Inside the new condo building at 230 King St. W. there are several buildings trying to get out.

One is the early 20th-century Edwardian bank that inhabited the site until last year. Then there are two red brick boxes, one on Sherbourne, one on King, as well as a pair of beige towers clad in precast concrete.

This is accomplished in different ways. Though many would argue that new buildings must ape the historical styles of their predecessors, there are other, better, routes to take. Mozo, for example, a thoroughly contemporary building across the road from 230, is built of masonry. In addition, the massing takes into account its mostly 19th-century neighbours.

Ironically, although the designers of 230 were required to retain the façade of the old Imperial bank, it doesn't add much heritage value to the new complex. It barely belongs to the rest of the building and looks exactly like what it is, an awkwardly incorporated exterior wall. Instead of giving us the best of both worlds — old and new — we end up with the worst of both.
