One sign of progress, however, is the appearance of new east-side condominium projects attractive to people affluent enough to support the shops and services that liven up a street. For an example of what I'm talking about, take Aspen Ridge Homes' Vü, slated to rise next spring at the corner of Jarvis and Adelaide streets.

Lofts with 10-foot ceilings are currently on the market for between $150,990 and $307,990, while apartments are for sale between $162,990 (a 485-square-foot studio) and $517,990 (a 1,200-square-foot two bedroom with den).

The design of Vu — with twp towers (15 and 24 storeys) and an eight-storey podium, bundles tightly around a little courtyard on a single block — is less about high style than solid city-building. Given that some people may feel apprehensive about the area, the building's relationship with the city is somewhat guarded. (Hariri Pontarini Architects)

Designed by David Pontarini, founding partner in the Toronto firm Hariri Pontarini Architects, Vü is less about high style than solid city-building. Its three main structural elements — two towers (15 and 24 storeys) and an eight-storey podium, bundled tightly around a little courtyard on a single block — are intended to be artistic responses to their urban context.

Design-savvy buyers are coming out to see the VU. In collaboration with esteemed Toronto design firm Cecconi Simone, Aspen Ridge Homes has unveiled a stunning new model suite at their popular condominium community, VU. The model showcases the fabulous suite feature that Aspen Ridge and Cecconi Simone created together for this fresh new urban community. In the towers themselves, studio, one-bedroom, one-bedroom plus den, two-bedroom and two-bedroom plus den suites range from 500 to 1,200 sq. ft. Most have kitchens with islands and many have balconies or terraces. There are also 13 street-level townhouses along George, available at 1,300 or 1,400 sq. ft.

  • Ogilvie, Megan. (2006, 20 May). "New VÜ for `Old Town'". Toronto Star.

When Goodwill Industries decided to sell its downtown flagship property in the fall of 2003, the charity wanted to find a new owner that would carry on the 70-year legacy of serving the community of "Old Town" Toronto.

Three and a half years later, lofts, condos and townhouses are for sale in VÜ, the master-planned condominium community by Aspen Ridge Homes that will be built on the Goodwill site.

After purchasing the block in the spring of 2004, Aspen Ridge invited four of Toronto's leading architectural firms to submit designs. Hariri Pontarini Architects, in partnership with Young and Wright Architects, won the competition with its contemporary design that suits the surroundings, says Lyon.

VÜ will encompass the entire block: Two towers of condominium suites will be connected with an eight-storey podium made up of retail space, lofts and a collection of 13 townhouses along George St. The 24-storey tower will overlook St. James Park and the 15-storey tower will be on the centre line of Adelaide St.
